1 What it covers

Seafarer Medical Fitness Certificate (STCW I/9) certifies medical fitness for shipboard duties, subject to any restrictions recorded by the medical examiner. It is needed by crew before service on board. Validity: by the certificate, at most 2 years.1–3

2 What it consists of

The standard of competence is set by table A-I/9 of the Code.1,2

3 Validity and renewal

Document validity. The expiry date, if the issuing system sets one, is shown on the document itself. This reference does not calculate personal expiry dates.

Maximum period. A medical certificate is valid for no more than 2 years, or 1 year for seafarers under the age of 18. The certificate may be issued for a shorter period.1,3
